Mission to Seafarers

The Mission to Seafarers, sponsored by the Anglican Diocese of New Westminster in cooperation with the Roman Catholic Apostleship of the Sea, the Korean (Presbyterian) Seamen's Mission, and the Christian Reformed Church, assists crew members of the merchant marine.  To do so, it employs the four chaplains and engages volunteers who visit the crews of approximately 2,500 ships in the Port of Vancouver and Roberts Bank and assist the seafarers in the Flying Angel Clubs that it operates in those ports.  Staff and volunteers also provide shore transportation.  The Clubs welcome over 14,000 seafarers a year.

The Vancouver club is the historic blue house on the waterfront.  The Mission, a registered charity, is part of the 150-year-old, worldwide Mission to Seafarers. www.flyingangel.ca

127 Society for Housing

The 127 Society owns and operates three buildings in Vancouver’s Downtown South that house 300 low-income residents, who are typically hard to house. It is a registered charity, sponsored by Christ Church Cathedral and assisted by the (Anglican) Diocese of New Westminster, the City, the Province, and CMHC. The Society employs a community worker in each of these buildings to assist the tenants and raises funds to do so.

In February 2008, it was selected to develop a new project in Vancouver’s Downtown South under the Provincial Homelessness Initiative. St James Community Services Society will provide the tenant services. St James Anglican Church, located at Gore and Cordova in the Downtown Eastside, created the St James Community Services Society to respond to the needs of its neighbourhood.
